The city of Caesarea - nice to meet you

And just before we explore that fun and special tour, let's get to know the setting for the tour - the coastal city of Caesarea, which lies on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and boasts a rich and complex history that spans two thousand years.

The story of the city begins in the 1st century BC, when Caesarea was founded by King Herod, who turned it into a magnificent city with a port, amphitheater, temple and other cultural buildings. The city of Caesarea became the capital of the Roman province of Judea and played a significant role in the governance of the Roman Empire. During this period, the city served as a center for early Christianity and is mentioned several times in the New Testament.

With the fall of the Roman Empire, Caesarea continued to prosper under Byzantine rule in the 4th to 7th centuries AD. The city became an important Christian center, with many churches and monastic communities living in the area.

The prosperity of Caesarea was interrupted for a moment in the 7th century AD, this following the Islamic conquests that led to a decline in the importance of the city.

In the 12th century, Caesarea was conquered by the Crusaders, who fortified the city and turned it into an important outpost in the Kingdom of Jerusalem. However, this period was short-lived, as the city fell to the Mamluks in 1265. The Mamluks dismantled the city's fortifications and left it in ruins, leading to a prolonged period of neglect and decline.

Caesarea remained sparsely populated during the Ottoman period, which lasted from the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century. However, the site attracted interest from archaeologists and historians, who began to uncover the city's ancient past.

In the 20th century, with the establishment of the State of Israel, the city of Caesarea began to experience a revival. The archaeological excavations in the area have been renewed, revealing the splendor of the ancient city. Today, the city of Caesarea is a national park and a major tourist destination, for its ancient ruins, beautiful beaches and vibrant cultural scene.

The area also includes remains of Herod's palace, public baths and ancient streets that are thousands of years old.
