On the pristine shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the heart of the historic port city of Livorno, is the city's underwater observatory, which, apart from being a leading attraction in the city, stands as a symbol of its maritime heritage. The popular institution was inaugurated in 2003 and since then has undergone expansions and renovations that have turned it into one of the most modern and mesmerizing maritime centers in Europe. The aquarium found its home in the city of Livorno in the picturesque region of Tuscany, a city that offers a delightful combination of historic architecture, delicious cuisine and captivating beaches.

The magnificent aquarium has taken it upon itself as a mission to educate the public about marine life by showcasing marine habitats from around the world. The aquarium exhibits deal with the importance of preserving marine ecosystems and understanding the deep connection between humans and the sea.

A colorful and fascinating journey

Livorno's aquarium is built on two floors, the ground floor dedicated to the worlds of marine creatures, and the upper floor dedicated to the world of insects, amphibians and reptiles.

Let's start on the top floor, where you will discover the beauty and curiosity of the world of insects, reptiles and amphibians with huge tanks including chameleons, iguanas, frogs and more. On the first floor you will also find a spectacular observation deck where you will have a panoramic view of the Livorno city promenade against the background of the islands of the Tuscan archipelago.

From there, you will reach the highlight of the underwater observatory - the water world, where you will find no less than 33 tanks and aquariums that will take you on a journey through various marine habitats - from the nearby Mediterranean Sea to the coral reefs of the Pacific Ocean.

Mediterranean region: Here you can experience the marine life of the creatures that live in the Mediterranean waters surrounding Italy. Among the spectacular tanks you will find colorful reef fish, turtles and a huge number of other marine creatures.

The tropical region: In the tropical zone you will embark on a journey in the warm ocean waters, where you will discover graceful zebra sharks, playful clown fish and swinging hand roses.

Freshwater ecosystems: The aquarium also emphasizes freshwater habitats, with one of the highlights being the Amazon display, home to piranhas and other species native to the vast Amazon River.

In addition to the spectacular aquariums and tanks that invite you to observe, Livorno's aquarium advocates the closeness between man and creatures, and you will find a variety of interactive activities, from contact tanks where you can touch starfish, to educational workshops that are suitable for children and adults alike, these provide in-depth insights into marine conservation and the multitude of species that call for a home aquarium.

The aquarium also dedicates its time to the preservation and protection of marine life by presenting breeding programs for endangered creatures and hosting conferences and lectures on the subject.
