The story of Christmas in Strasbourg - from the Middle Ages to the present day

The story of Christmas in Strasbourg is a rich and fascinating story, beginning somewhere in the Middle Ages when the first edition of the city's Christmas market took place in 1570, and since then everything is history. This year, the first Christmas market in France, and one of the oldest in all of Europe, the Christkindelsmärik, took place in the central town square, designed to provide the local residents with all the necessary equipment to last them through the cold days of the Alsatian winter period.

And as the years progressed, the modest market grew, and so did its reputation, becoming a bustling center of color and interest, inviting visitors from neighboring towns and villages, and in the future also from distant lands.

In Strasbourg, Christmas is no longer a time of year, but an ingrained part of the Alsatian identity. The geographical location of the city, at a crossroads between cultures, enriched its holiday traditions when the markets and events expressed the combination between French elegance and German atmosphere, making Strasbourg a unique focus and different from any other town and village.

In the 90s, Strasbourg declared itself the "Capital of Christmas", a bold declaration that reflected its confidence, this in the face of hundreds and thousands of competing cities that claim the crown to this day. This is no idle pride, for for decades the city has invested in marketing, infrastructure and development programs to ensure that the Christmas experience here is unlike any other.

And today, Christmas in Strasbourg is the jewel in the crown of the Alsace region, attracting millions of visitors every year, from every corner of the world. These come looking not only for the magic of its markets, but also for the atmosphere of a city that lives and breathes Christmas, 365 days a year.

The Christmas story of Strasbourg is a testament to the power of tradition and a city's ability to reinvent itself. Each year, as the festive lights illuminate the city once again, Strasbourg renews its age-old promise to bring joy, fun and a sense of community to all who walk its glittering streets.
