Itinerary for a trip to Northern Italy - August

Trip to Northern Italy - August 2022

🇮🇹 Excited just like you about your trip to Northern Italy 🇮🇹

A tip before you start: the most beautiful towns on Lake Garda are Riva del Garda, Limone sul Garda and the town of Sermione.

You took a hotel in the southern part of the lake (Sermione is indeed in the southern part) and since you are going to the Moiland and Gardland attractions, I have given you at the end of the days of the attractions, nearby towns to visit such as Bardolino and Zisa with a desire to save on travel, so as not to burden you these days.

Don't miss the recommended towns of Riva del Garda, Limone sul Garda and Sirmione, these are the most recommended, spend time exploring these towns, they are pleasant to wander and shop in.

* Always write in Google Maps or Viz old town, to get directly to the beautiful historical center of the towns, this is true for all the towns in Garda.

Day 1: 18.8 flight to Milan and drive to the hotel on Lake Garda

Landing in the evening at the Milan airport - eat something at the airport and immediately continue driving to the hotel.

Check with the hotel until when you can check in, if you are arriving late, it is advisable to notify in advance by email.

The trip to Lake Garda is about two hours, maybe more, stock up on water and snacks for the trip.

Day 2: 19.8 visit to Mobileland and bathe in the lake and visit the town of Lazisa

*Please note that you can reverse the agenda and go to Mobileland in the morning and then go to the town of Zisa at noon, for lunch and in the evening when it's less hot to walk around the promenade and the old town of Zisa and watch the sunset there, since Mobileland is open in August until 23:00 pm at night, I thought it would be worthwhile for you to take a walk, swim in the lake, eat Then in the evening you will go to Mobileland, but whatever is convenient for you.

The distance between the town of Lezisa and Mobileland is about five minutes.

A visit to the picturesque walled town of Lazise overlooking the south-eastern shore of Lake Garda. Start the day by bathing in the lake on the shores of the town.

Inside the walls you will see the beautiful city center, with the picturesque old port and the Venetian customs in front of the lake, and with its magnificent churches.

A short distance from the center of the town, in the village of Cola, you can find the beautiful Villa dei Cedri, a natural spa surrounded by vegetation.

There are ferry boats in Lazise: you can take a cruise to the town of Sirmione without worrying about driving and parking, if you want, you can also rent a boat or take a private tour with one of the companies in Lazise, (for example Summertime Boats Rent or Garda Charter).

For example, click for a sample of a recommended sailing trip

Lazisa is rich in beaches. The most beautiful are the equipped beaches Spiaggia delle Rose and Spiaggia La Bosca. There are also two free beaches, called La Marra – Pra' del Principe” and “Cavazzocca

Whether you decide to sail a boat or take a dip in the lake at one of the beaches, each choice will be excellent.

There is a guided tour of the old city district including wine tasting and this is recommended - Click for details

I recommend walking around the old city and not missing a trip along its spectacular promenade, walking between ice cream parlors, cafes and restaurants and choosing a restaurant to sit in.

THE SCALIGER WALLS

The Scaliger Walls are the walls that surround the town of Lazise, and include the beautiful medieval Lazise Castle. The walls are well preserved and three gates are still accessible: Cansignorio (to the north), San Zino (to the east), and Lyon (to the south). The castle Castello Scaligre, with its tall towers, is now a private residence, but the walls offer a beautiful view of Lazise and the lake. The walk on the walls is free and lasts about an hour.

At the end of the recreation in the old city and the boardwalk and after you have bathed in the lake go to Mobileland

After graduating from Gardland Drive about 13 minutes to the town of Bardolino, a tour of the old town and dinner.

Bardolino The town of Bardolino Garda

Bardolino is one of the most important and well-known tourist destinations in Lake Garda. On the eastern shore of the lake about 30 km from the provincial capital Verona.

Bardolino is known for the beauty of the old town center with its alleys, the many shops, the typical restaurants and the long promenade along the lake shore, recommend walking along the promenade and watching the sunset.

Interesting places worth visiting are the Romanesque church "San Severo" with its interesting frescoes, the church "Santa Maria" in Cisano

You can visit the alleys, see the colorful houses and walk along the boardwalk, it has excellent restaurants with the most delicious pastas we have ever eaten. For wine lovers this is an opportunity to taste Bardolino, the special wine of the Garda region.

**Restaurant recommendation: Ristorante Pizzeria La Cantinetta is recommended!!!!

Address: Via S. Martino, 13, 37011 Bardolino VR

I recommend eating the pasta with mushroom sauce, their chips are amazing and recommended, the tastiest I've ever eaten, there are fish dishes and pizzas.

Day 4: 21.8 visit to the town of Malcesine, a cable car ride to Monte Baldo and the town of Limone sul Garda

Driving to the town of Malcesine - about 38 minutes from the Lazise area -

Malcesine is a small town on the eastern shore of Lake Garda in northern Italy. It is a picturesque tourist resort with paved paths and a castle.

In Malcesine, get on the cable car:

Malcesine-Monte Baldo cableway

Address of the cable car Via Navene Vecchia, 12, 37018 Malcesine

Monte Baldo

Monte Baldo is a peak in the beautiful town of Malcesine on Lake Garda. From the top you will see a beautiful view of Lake Garda.

Malcesine is the town from where you will take the cable car to the top of Monte Baldo and reach the top of Monte Altissimo, the highest peak overlooking Lake Garda, where you can go hiking, enjoy a wonderful meal at Rifugio Altissimo/Damiano Chiesa, or simply enjoy the amazing views of the lake from above.

You can also walk along picturesque medieval alleys in the town itself before or after you go up the cable car, we really enjoyed the walk in the alleys, the ice cream parlors are some of the best we ate in Italy.

The attraction in the town of Malcesine is the castle Castello Scaligero, the castle is very well preserved and it includes the Museum of Natural History (Museo di Storia Naturale), a nice activity for children, you can also explore the castle's rooms, passages and tunnels, and go up to the tower for an observation and you can just see it from the outside.

There are boat tours available, you can just hop on the ferry to Riba del Garda, Limone sul Garda or other resorts on the lake.

I will give you tips for parking, since we walked around for no less than two hours to find parking, a recommendation, arrive very, very early to find parking.

Car parks in Malcesine:

Campogrande car park

Parking lot in Piazza Statuto

Paina parking lot

In Malcesine, at the cable car station

In Saint Michel, at the middle cable car station

To avoid the queue for the cable car in peak season, you can go to the midway station in Saint Michel. Instead of the cable car, go straight to the intermediate station by car, saving a two-hour queue for the cable car.

Another tip** to bring a jacket and warm clothes for the children, up on the summit it is cool and there are winds. Always check the visibility on the mountain with the cameras on the site, check the forecast, check that there are no clouds on the summit.

The cable car runs from Malcesina to the high mountain range behind the town, Monte Baldo, climbing from 100 meters to 1760 meters. This is a great hike, especially on a hot day, as the temperatures are lower and the wind cooler than by the lake far below.

To the left (north) at the exit of the cable car station, a panoramic path leads along the ridge strewn with flowers to a charming observation point about twenty minutes' easy walk away. In the other direction, trail 651 is easy to walk for about an hour south, with a spectacular view.

If you don't feel like hiking, you can still enjoy the view of the lake and the observation deck. At the cable car station, there is a terrace, a bar and a self-service restaurant with good value. There is another cafe-restaurant nearby, while a third restaurant, with an alpine atmosphere plus lounge chairs, is a short walk north on the way to the viewpoint.

The cable cars get busy so you should be prepared for queues. Cable cars with a capacity of 45 people go up to a halfway station called Saint Michel. There is a restaurant here, access to the road (with a parking lot), and walks up or down the slopes. After the middle station there is another cable car that continues the journey up to Monte Baldo and takes 70 people and makes a slow turn so that everyone can enjoy the view over Lake Garda to the mountain.

A return ticket from Malcesine to Monte Baldo costs 17 euros, with discounted rates of 11 euros for 65 and over and children - (I'm really not sure the price is up to date, the price may have gone up).

Additional tips about going up the cable car to the mountain for a view of all of Lake Garda from Mount Baldo:

Please note that the wait in line for tickets to the cable car can be up to two hours, it is recommended to skip the line and buy a ticket to the top, in the towns there are stalls and vendors that sell tickets for boat tours or to board the cable car to Menta Baldo, these tickets are worth their weight in gold and will make you go directly to the line to board the cable car instead of the ticket office. As mentioned, it is also possible to drive to the intermediate station with the car and not take the cable car.

**** Reach the mountain only on a beautiful day when there are no clouds.

You can have lunch at the restaurant at the top.

After the descent, you can take a walk in the town of Malcesine, pass through the alleys between pizzerias, ice cream shops and shops. The castle Castelo Scaligre, as mentioned, is the main tourist attraction of the town.

**If going up the cable car will take many hours, I recommend immediately after getting off the cable car, not to linger long in Malcesina and drive or sail directly to Limone, Limone is more beautiful than Malcesine and perhaps the most beautiful town in all of Garda, don't miss it and it is advisable to schedule lunch in Limone Sol Garda.

two options:

  1. Take a boat from the town of Malcesine to the beautiful town of Limone sul Garda.
  2. Take the car and drive about 34 minutes to the town of Limone sul Garda.

Limone sul Garda is recommended - not to be missed!!!

Limone sul Garda, perhaps the most beautiful town on Lake Garda, thanks to the mountains that surround it. It is surrounded by lemon groves. Limone has a picturesque historic center and a promenade by the lake, we really enjoyed walking along the alleys and the promenade, which is not long but the view is breathtaking, we really liked the ice cream parlors and restaurants, what makes Limone special, are the amazing mountains that are simply breathtaking!!

Limone sul Garda is a charming village on Lake Garda, in the province of Brescia (Lombardy), famous for its fragrant and rich lemon houses, excellent virgin olive oil and the longevity of its inhabitants. Narrow alleys, staircases, spectacular views and a picturesque harbor have made Limone sul Garda one of the most popular tourist destinations on the lake.

This is also the place to shop, there are many shops. The historic center is full of ups and downs, alleys, staircases, paved streets, open spaces and terraces that offer wonderful views, colorful houses decorated with flowers and plants, craft shops. The colorful marina is a real charm!

My advice? Enter the historic center and start wandering, you will discover magical corners.

Day 5: 22.8 Visit to the town of Sermione and Verona waterfalls

Sirmione- recommended, not to be missed!!!

Travel by car to the town of Sermione

Sirmione parking address: Via Marconi, 4, 25019 Sirmione BS

Check if this is the parking lot right next to the old city

Sirmione is a beautiful city located on the shore of Lake Garda in the northern part of Italy.

Sermione is considered one of the most beautiful pearls and towns on Lake Garda, a visit is a must. It is special thanks to the Rocca Scaligera fortress, right on the shore of the lake, which looks like a fairytale mansion with its turrets overlooking the turquoise lake.

The citadel is at the entrance to the old city and you simply cannot miss it. Opening hours: Tuesdays - Sundays - between 9-00 and 19-00 Entrance fee: 6 euros for adults and 2 euros for children.

It is highly recommended to get out of its alleys and surround the entire historic center, you will pass right on the promenade by the lake along luxury hotels, along beaches and you will see many swans and ducks.

It is highly recommended to walk in the alleys of the old city and the main pedestrian street and enjoy street performances, ancient architecture, shopping, many cafes and ice cream parlors, many restaurants open until late at night. You can walk among them, eat delicious Italian food, drink great local wine.

In Sermione you can take a cruise in a racing boat, the cruise surrounds the entire walls of the fortress, you can feed the swans that get really close to people.

From Sirmione to go to the Verona Falls a little less than an hour's drive

Verona Falls

שעות פתיחה:

09:00-19:00

Address: Località Le Foci, 3, 38060 Tenno TN, Italy

The visit to the Varone Falls includes several observation points. The first view can be seen from below, through the lower cave: from here you can watch the waterfall in its final stage. The second observation point, on the other hand, is located 40 meters higher, in the upper cave, from where you can admire the Varone waterfall in the middle of its fall.

The cave and the waterfall are located inside a private natural park, you can go up to the paths, the bridges, the railings and the winding staircase, and watch this impressive natural spectacle.

You can switch between the activities and spend the evening in Sermione, in the summer there are street performances and the city is very lively at night, there are many restaurants.

Day 6: 23.8 Visit to the town of Riba del Garda and Lake Tano

Riva del Garda is recommended, not to be missed!!!

The northern shores of Lake Garda are very beautiful because of the views of the Alps. Riba del Garda is the largest and most famous town in the northern part of the lake, I recommend visiting the historic center of Riba del Garda, a lovely place with a spectacular view, cafes and restaurants, in the evening and also during the day there are street shows in the summer, singers, musicians, pantomime shows, etc. .

Riva del Garda, located in the northern part of Lake Garda in Trentino Alto Adige.

It is considered the "Pearl of Lake Garda", and is located in a spectacular landscape, the gentle waters of the lake on one side and the Brenta Dolomites on the other. Also the village itself with its medieval fortress, the ancient historical center, the Aponella tower, the marina, the beaches make it one of the most beautiful in Lake Garda. Riva del Garda is small, so it will only take you a few hours to see it.

Riva del Garda is also called "the jewel of Lake Garda". Lemon trees, palm trees as well as bay trees are very characteristic of this lakeside village.

The "Rocca di Riva" castle originated in 1124 and is completely surrounded by water. Today it houses the municipal museum

After spending time in Riba del Garda, drive to Lake Tano - 14 minutes drive

Lake of Tenno

Lake Tano, this is a special turquoise lake. Tano is one of the most amazing lakes and is considered a real gem. Lake Tano is located 15 minutes drive from Lake Garda and is breathtaking and highly recommended, clear turquoise water of a very, very special color. You can also visit Canale di Tenno, a nearby and authentic medieval village.

Lake Tano represents a real jewel in the Tarantino landscape. Due to its azure-turquoise color shades, this lake, which has an almost perfectly round shape, is located at an altitude of 570 m above sea level and is embedded in a complete natural landscape at the foot of Monte Missone.

Please note ***Compared to Lake Garda, Lake Tano is more secluded, there are no buildings on the shore of the lake, no restaurants or cafes and you cannot reach the lake by car, but park and leave via medieval stairs. The lake is surrounded by thick forest, if you think some people won't be able to climb, you can give up, but I don't remember it being too difficult and the lake is simply breathtaking and recommended.

What to do in Lake Tano?

The lake is an oasis of calm and perfect for those looking for relaxation. Thanks to the pleasant water temperature in summer and its clear waters, you can also enjoy swimming. You can do a one-hour walking route around the lake

alternative:

If you didn't make it the day before, visit the amazing waterfall Cascata del Varone, where the water of Lake Tano flows into a narrow gorge or visit one of the towns, if you didn't make it before.

A trip to Milan

You can skip Lake Tano and travel early to Milan and spend your evening there. The main attraction in Milan is the cathedral . This is also the main piazza, there are many Restaurants, shops forShopping, Attractions and so'.

Arrival at the hotel near the airport in Milan.

Day 7: 24.8 day trip to Lake Como - the towns of Varna and Bellagio

Take a ferry to the towns of Varna, Bellagio and Managgio - especially Varna and Bellagio are the most beautiful towns on Lake Como

Please note that you can get on foot or get on the ferry with the car, you stay in the car and lift the car onto a large ship.

You can drive from Milan to Menaggio by car, park and then take the ferry to Lorena and Bellagio from there.

There is also an organized trip from Milan to Lake Como, Varna and Bellagio - For details!

Varenna

Varna is a picturesque and traditional village, located on the eastern shore of Lake Como, Italy.

Varna is an essential stop for anyone who wants to visit one of the most typical and quiet cities of the lake. A must if you are in Milan or Bellagio, which is only a 15 minute ferry ride away.

Piazza San Giorgio, the town center of Varna, is home to the Church of San Giorgio. Head towards the lake and walk along the narrow streets that branch off from Piazza San Giorgio. Varna's lakeside, called Riva Grande, is simply delightful! Here you will find several cafes, restaurants, local artisan shops, ice cream parlors and more.

Stroll among the colorful houses that light up the village and take a romantic stroll along the Passeggiata degli innamorati (Lovers' Promenade), the inspiring lake promenade that connects Riva Grande to the boat station, where you'll see boats and ferries keep coming and going.

Bellagio

A trip to Lake Como is incomplete without a visit to its pearl: Bellagio, one of the most beautiful places in the Lombardy region, Italy.

Bellagio is located halfway between the two southernmost branches of the lake, and is famous around the world for its beautiful villas overlooking the water (such as Villa Serbelloni or Villa Malci).

The tiny streets of Bellagio are so beautiful, the old town center of Bellagio has one main road, Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, which reaches the Ponte Partivento (the edge of the village) in less than 10 minutes.

Via Giuseppe Garibaldi is populated by dozens of shops and boutiques where visitors can find local food, leather goods, clothing, perfumes and more. To the left of the main street, several alleys lead to the lakeside.

These alleys are also full of shops and restaurants... and stairs! So put on a pair of comfortable shoes. You don't have to go up the stairs, you can walk along the lake.

In the center of the town, you can reach Piazza della Chiesa and admire the Basilica of San Giacomo, a Romanesque church built between the 11th and 12th centuries.

***If you have time left, you can also visit the city of Naggio, but it is less beautiful in my opinion, spend more time in Lorna and Bellagio.

Menaggio

Menaggio  It is a picturesque and ancient town overlooking Lake Como.

Menaggio is loved by tourists all over the world, especially because of the elegant lake promenade and the proximity to very popular towns such as Bellagio and Verna (can be reached by ferry in 15-30 minutes)

Upon your arrival in Manggio, start your tour from Via Calvi and look at the small boutiques and artisan shops, which sell local products such as food, shoes, clothing and home accessories.

During the walk, you should pay attention to the Church of Santa Marta, which you will find in the middle of the street.

Take time to visit the interior of the church, and admire the ancient paintings that date back to the 17th century.

Continue walking towards Lake Como and you will reach Piazza Garibaldi, a fantastic place to sit and drink coffee or ice cream while enjoying the view of the most beautiful lake in the world.

***It is possible to skip the city of Managgio and arrive early in the evening back to the hotel near the airport to rest before the flight early in the morning.
